Non-Contact Measurement
When you need nanometer-level accuracy without ever touching the part, MTI’s non-contact displacement sensors deliver. Our portfolio is organized into four sensor families each optimized for a different range, resolution, and application. MTI Instruments specializes in non-contact displacement sensors designed for extreme precision. Whether your application demands nanometer displacement measurement for precision manufacturing or picometer displacement measurement for scientific research and semiconductor metrology, our sensors deliver industry-leading accuracy and repeatability.
What is Non-Contact Displacement Sensing?
Non-contact displacement sensing measures the distance between a sensor and a target without physical contact, eliminating part loading, wear, and the risk of scratches or dents. Technologies include capacitance, fiber-optic, eddy-current, laser triangulation, and confocal chromatic sensing. Engineers rely on these techniques to:
- Map semiconductor surface topography down to nanometers
- Verify brake-rotor run-out and smartphone stack-up height in production
- Capture sub-micron vibrations in ultrasonic welders and piezo transducers
- Measure glass, film, or coating thickness without damaging delicate layers
Because no mechanical force is applied, measurements remain repeatable even on soft, thin, or high-speed targets.
