Advanced Sensing & Physical Measurement Technology Principles

Laser Triangulation Sensors

Laser triangulation sensors can be divided into two categories based upon their performance and intended use. High-resolution lasers are typically used in displacement and position monitoring applications where high accuracy, stability and low temperature drift are required. Quite frequently these laser sensors are used in process monitoring and closed-loop feedback control systems. Proximity type laser triangulation sensors are much less expensive and are typically used to detect the presence of a part, or used in counting applications.

Capacitance Sensors

Capacitive sensors can be divided into two categories based upon their performance and intended use. High-resolution sensors are typically used in displacement and position monitoring applications where high accuracy, stability and low temperature drift are required. Quite frequently these sensors are used in process monitoring and closed-loop feedback control systems. Proximity type capacitive sensors are much less expensive and are typically used to detect the presence of a part or used in counting applications.

Fiber Optic Sensors

The Fotonic Sensor™ is a non-contact instrument which uses the fiber optics lever principle to perform displacement, vibration and surface-condition measurements. The Fotonic Sensor transmits a beam of light through a flexible fiber-optic probe, receives light reflected from a target surface, and converts this light into an electrical signal proportional to the distance between the probe tip and the target being measured. A simplified example of the fiber optic principal is shown in Figure 2. The output signal voltage from the fiber optic sensor is then used to determine position, displacement, vibration amplitude, frequency and waveshape of a target surface.

Laser Thickness Gauge System

The Microtrak™ 3 TGS system uses the principle of laser triangulation to perform a one dimensional measurement of a target. The laser projects a beam of light onto a surface which is then reflected back. A CMOS array detects the position of the returned beam and is converted into a distance measurement. Auto Gain is used to optimize the laser power for the surface being measured. The laser is suitable for measuring all types of diverse surfaces such as metallic, wood, ceramic, steel, or plastics in all colors including black.

Engine Vibration and Balancing

The PBS line of products continues a 50-year tradition of supplying airlines, airmotives and engine manufacturers with a reliable and easy-to-use engine vibration tool. Our Portable Balancing Systems’ powerful package includes vibration surveys, vibration diagnostics and trim balancing.

Handheld Signal Source Generator

The MTI 1510A is a sophisticated two channel battery powered microprocessor controlled direct digital synthesizer. It can generate sine, square, saw tooth and triangle continuous signals on both channels as well as single pulse and odd pulses on the B channel to simulate tachometer output pulses.
